Dear Guests:

The 2012 NTU International Conference on Finance, hosted by the Department of Finance, National Taiwan University, convenes today. On behalf of the organizer of this conference, I would like to extend my most sincere welcome to our distinguished guests and fellow participants.

The NTU International Conference on Finance was first held in 1995, and it has become a premier international forum on finance in the Asia-Pacific region. This year, we are honored to have three internationally renowned scholars as our keynote speakers. Today’s keynote speakers are Professor George G. Pennacchi and Professor Chung-Ming Kuan. Professor Pennacchi is the Investor in Business Education Professor of Finance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on financial intermediaries and the valuation of fixed-income securities and government guarantees. Currently, he is the Managing Editor of the Journal of Financial Intermediation. Professor Kuan is the NTU University Chair Professor and Distinguished Professor at Department of Finance, National Taiwan University. He is also an academician of Academia Sinica. Currently, he serves as a Minister without Portfolio of the Executive Yuan. His main research fields include econometric theory, financial econometrics, and macroeconomic forecasting.

Tomorrow’s keynote speaker is Professor David L. Yermack. Professor Yermack is the Albert Fingerhut Professor of Finance and Business Transformation at New York University Stern School of Business. His primary research areas include boards of directors, executive compensation, executive stock options, and law and finance.

In addition to the keynote speeches, this year’s conference also features two general sessions, five panel sessions, and eleven academic sessions. For academic sessions, we received 202 submissions, and accepted 39 papers for presentation in the conference. Among the accepted papers, we select five of them for the Outstanding Paper Award. We hope to take this opportunity to foster the exchange of ideas among academics, practitioners, and regulators on the important issues we face.

To make this conference possible, we need a lot of help. We want to express our gratitude to all the participants of the panel sessions, and the authors and discussants of the academic sessions. We also sincerely thank the academics both locally and abroad who reviewed the papers in preparation for this conference. For all of you who gather here today, thank you for your enthusiasm and support.

I would also like to thank our key sponsors, Fubon Financial Holding and Nan Shan Life Insurance, and all the other sponsors. Without your generous financial support, this conference will not be possible.

Finally, I wish everyone here healthy and prosperous.

Sincerely,
